![]() ![]() ![]() While not specifically studied at Shenandoah, there are many openings in the forest communities caused by ice storms, blow-downs from hurricanes and other severe storms, as well as tree mortality from insects and disease all of which could provide ideal habitat for Downy Woodpeckers. The narrow entrance to the Downy Woodpecker’s nest protects both the adults and the young from practically all predators except snakes.ĭowny Woodpeckers do well in early second-growth forests, where there are more open stands of trees than in older forests. Black rat snakes often prey on Downy eggs and nestlings, as do flying, red, and eastern grey squirrels. Ecosystem Role/Threatsĭowny Woodpeckers are preyed upon by the American Kestrel, the Sharp-shinned Hawk, and the Cooper’s Hawk. Additionally, their skulls are heavier than most birds’ to withstand the repeated impact. Woodpeckers have a shock-absorbing system in their heads that prevents their brains from slamming into their skull. ![]() While drumming is needed to create a nesting cavity or find insects under heavy bark, male woodpeckers also drum to establish a territory and maintain dominance afterwards. Drumming, one of the unique characteristics of woodpeckers, is both functional and a way to defend territory. The Downy call is a sharp “pik” and song a harsh rattle. While some bird species have been negatively impacted by the fragmentation of forests or other habitat due to suburban sprawl and rural development, Downy Woodpeckers seem to be unaffected and even thrive in such areas. They are found year-round throughout this range, though, like many year-round resident birds, they may change the areas that they frequent, thus seeming to appear and disappear with the change of seasons.ĭowny Woodpeckers prefer open deciduous forests, although they frequent a variety of habitats including parks and back yards. Range/Habitatĭowny Woodpeckers are found throughout the United States with the exception of Hawaii and parts of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, and Alaska. In most areas, parents only raise one brood per year, though there is evidence that they may raise two in the southern portions of their range, where food is available for a longer time during the spring and summer. Between hatching and fledging, the parents must bring their rapidly growing young plenty of food, a job which taxes the parents severely. Unlike humans, which take years to raise, the young leave the nest only three weeks after birth. After 12 days of incubation, the helpless young hatch. ![]() Broods generally contain 3-6 eggs, though likely, only one or two of the young will survive to the next year. Downy Woodpeckers nest in cavities of trees without any significant lining within. If a Downy Woodpecker survives the winter, it will prepare for nesting the spring following its birth. Downys, like other small birds, have a median life span that is much shorter than the maximum due to high mortality in the first year of life. Fish and Wildlife Service, which keeps records of banding and recapture, a Downy Woodpecker was caught 11 years and 11 months after its first capture. This capture and recapture do not represent the greatest time span on record according to the Bird Banding Laboratory of the U.S. When originally captured, its plumage indicated that it was at least a year old, meaning that this bird was twelve or more years of age. Despite this, a Downy Woodpecker that was captured and banded at the San FranciscoBay bird observatory was recaptured 11 years and one month later. A five year old downy is an old bird, as the median lifespan of Downys is between one and two years. Life Span/ReproductionĪs with many small birds, Downy Woodpeckers have a relatively short lifespan. However, the Hairy Woodpecker is larger (7.5 inches) and has a longer bill. The most similar species is the hairy woodpecker, which has nearly identical plumage. The downy has a white breast with black and white back. Adult birds weigh between 0.74 and 1 ounces (21-28 g). Physical Descriptionĭowny Woodpeckers are between 6 and 7 inches (14-17 cm) in length and their wingspan is between 10 and 12 inches (25-30 cm). In ShenandoahNational Park, Downy Woodpeckers are among the relatively few bird species regularly seen during the winter. Downy Woodpeckers hold the distinction of being the most common and smallest American woodpecker. More often seen in winter at suet feeders than in the woods, “Downys” are year-round residents of ShenandoahNational Park and in most of their range. ![]()

Take stock of what foods and ingredients you already have at home so you don’t waste time and money finding them at the store. This begins with making a grocery shopping list at home. ![]() This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to prioritize your trip to the store or farmers market before you even begin meal prepping. I swear by these strategies to keep myself on track - and they’ve also worked for thousands across the world. Here are my top five tips to becoming a meal-prep master. Years later, I’ve kept to meal planning and perfected the how-tos. This simple small step was my catalyst to establishing a routine for healthy eating. Then one day, I decided to make all the oatmeal I’d need for the week in one day (so five one-serving portions). I found myself skipping breakfast because I just didn’t “have the time.” In grad school, I had quite the packed schedule, juggling writing a thesis, classes, and work. I first used the concept of meal planning before I knew what it was called. Setting up a system for meal planning may be the solution you need to stay on track. The question is: To make your diet work, do you really need to meal prep?īut if you want to save yourself hours a week from cooking and running to the grocery store to pick up those last-minute items you forgot, dining out, or skipping meals (to eat only snacks on the go), then the answer is yes. You may have heard of the trend “meal-prep Mondays.” Nowadays everyone - no matter what diet they’re trying - seems to be doing it. The four elements are turned into feuding factions in Elemental, and as you might imagine, this Romeo and Juliet–esque tale wants to preach the importance of tolerance. ![]() Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis) is a fire element that ends up having to team up with Wade (Mamoudou Athie), a water element, to prevent their city from being destroyed by a mysterious canal leak. It’s just the story that keeps causing the problems. And, indeed, the fantastical realm of Element City is gorgeously imagined, both futuristic and romantic. And then take away those points because Cars 2 proves that even the mighty Pixar can’t transcend the central problem with sequels: You can make everything bigger, but you can rarely replicate what was novel and charming about the original.Įlemental continues a trend of recent Pixar movies that leave you thinking, Well, at least it looked amazing. Give Cars 2 points for audacity: The follow-up shifts away from the original’s small-town, homespun charm to become a sleek, globetrotting action-thriller focusing on Lightning McQueen’s country-bumpkin sidekick. But that didn’t mean we wanted to see Tow Mater in a James Bond spoof. Larry the Cable Guy was Cars’ secret weapon, lending his blue-collar earthiness to a character whose regular-folks demeanor had real pathos and sweetness. We’re not mad at Lightyear, we’re just disappointed. After a few years of taking chances, Lightyear feels like the safe, obvious, slightly lazy play from a studio that used to pride itself on not thinking that way. ![]() (Sox is voiced by Peter Sohn, who has worked at Pixar since the early 2000s, starting out as a story artist and doing voices on several of its films, not to mention directing The Good Dinosaur.) But this may be the first time that Pixar hasn’t fully justified one of its projects, at least creatively. Not surprisingly, Lightyear looks terrific, and it’s got some really funny moments - most of them provided by Sox, Buzz’s faithful robot cat. This origin story follows the adventures of Buzz (now voiced by Chris Evans) as he works with a ragtag bunch of recruits to defeat alien invaders on a distant planet. This is not, inherently, a terrible idea: What if Pixar actually made the movie that first got kids in the ’90s psyched about Buzz Lightyear toys? What would that movie look like? What kind of character would Buzz be? Unfortunately, Lightyear is a letdown, not only because it doesn’t satisfyingly answer those questions, but because it’s not an especially great ’90s action movie in its own right - or, conversely, a sharp parody of one. It’s not so much bad as it is deeply dispiriting. And from Randy Newman’s by-the-numbers score to every single one of Mater’s tired quips, Cars 3 plays out like a rival studio’s lukewarm attempt to mimic Pixar’s magic. There isn’t one interesting new character, despite the effort from Hammer, Kerry Washington, Nathan Fillion, and Chris Cooper as Lightning’s cranky new trainer. But where at least Cars 2 consciously tried to go in a radically different direction, Cars 3 feels like a tame holding pattern, providing the race sequences and heartwarming homilies that were rampant in the first film - except without the same level of inspiration. Yes, the dopey Tow Mater is, blessedly, back on the periphery where he belongs while Lightning (Owen Wilson) squares off with two new foes: a sleek race car named Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) and, more imposingly, the growing realization that he’s not the king of the track anymore. Not exactly a high bar … and we’re not even convinced this film gets over it. The worst you can say is that, at this point, Pixar is fighting a losing battle trying to live up to its own glorious past.Įarly reviews of Cars 3 praised the latest installment in the Lightning McQueen saga for, essentially, not being Cars 2, the only Pixar film to receive a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some of these movies work better than others, but all of them are trying to do something special - even if, in recent years, it seems like the studio’s magic has started to wane. We tried to keep context in mind - Toy Story had an ability to blow your mind in 1995 the way nothing could today - and also ambition: In the world of children’s entertainment, nothing has set Pixar apart more than its burning desire not to coast or mail it in. None of these movies is bad, but when you’ve made 27 films, one of them has to be No. Trying to rank all 27 Pixar feature films in order of quality is like trying to rank your children by how much you love them.
